Definition: System x


(1) A family of Intel x86-based servers from Lenovo. System x machines come in tower, rack mounted and blade configurations. Originally an IBM product line, System x was acquired by Lenovo in 2014. When part of IBM, the System x series was previously known as the eServer xSeries, and prior to that the Netfinity line.

(2) A supercomputer composed of more than a thousand Power Mac G5 CPUs that was developed at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2003. It achieved 12 teraFLOPS, ranking it number three in the TOP500 list of supercomputers for that year.
